3 Wardrobe Felonies I Hope You’re Not Committing

It’s a weekday morning and you’re starting your day.

You’ve had your shower, put on your makeup and now it’s time to get dressed – but you’re less than inspired. You stand in front of your closet, staring blankly – but seeing nothing. You might be running late for work or an appointment. Either way, this day isn’t starting off on the best foot.

*blink, blink*

For all the shopping you’ve done, you feel like you should have something to wear. And, even if you’re not much of a shop-a-holic, you don’t remember buying things you didn’t like for your wardrobe. So why is it so tough to put together an outfit?

I’ll tell you why. Because you’re a busy lady. You’ve got a career, important people in your life to take care of and a gazillion things to do/accomplish/worry about. Getting dressed should be easy. But it’s not.

Let’s take a step back from this closet crime scene and do some forensic investigation.

Exhibit A: you haven’t kept your closet well-organized or edited

When you bring groceries home, do you just throw them haphazardly into your pantry? Probably not. Most of us have a minimum level of organization for our cupboards, because it helps us find what we need when we’re whipping up a meal later. You’ve got to take the same approach with your closet.

Exhibit B: you’ve bought too many multiples

Nothing makes your wardrobe look homogenous like having the same shirt in two or three different colors. The same goes for pants too. Your wardrobe should look like a curated collection of garments that express the essence of your personality. If you want to be able to put together an inspired look, you need some good variety to choose from.

Exhibit C: you’ve slacked on laundry

The most important lesson in crafting a great image for yourself is that you have to take care of your clothing.

So, don’t over-dry things; hang dry when possible. Consider taking a few items to the dry cleaners twice a month. Most importantly – make sure your clothing is actually in your closet as much as possible. This means, keep up with your laundry and take care of it immediately once it comes out of the dryer.

I know – laundry’s a bitch. Amiright, ladies?

If fact, this last one is a major weakness for me. If I could send everything to the cleaners, I would!! But, I promise, your wardrobe will love you back if you love it first – so it’s worth the hassle.

  1. I’ve committed at least one of these felonies before! One of my time savers that I can’t live without is my steamer. I wash most of my silk blouses so it’s an essential tool. Definitely comes in handy after air-drying laundry.

I totally agree – I love my garment steamer! I bought mine at least 5 years ago and I use it once a week. So handy!

  2. Nicole,

Hi Thank for the the fabulous advice.

I need to organize. I own polkadot clothing galore and seem to pick those out and bypass rest.
